WHY A RED SEAL
3 January
THE STATE OF MASONRY IN ONTARIO
By: Austin Harril
In Ontario, Masonry is a ‘voluntary trade’.
This means that aside from basic safety training, there are no legally required certifications, college memberships, or training courses required to advertise and provide Masonry services in Ontario.
For those seeking Masonry work, this means that when selecting a provider of Masonry services, those who pursue a mastery of their craft compete side-by-side with untrained and inexperienced tradesmen for your selection. With no official government standard defining a minimum requirement of knowledge and ability to legitimately call oneself a Mason, the burden falls upon homeowners to do the work of sorting the professionals from the amateurs.
Getting the value your investment in masonry entitles you to depends fundamentally on your ability to differentiate between these two groups. But without a technical knowledge of Masonry, how are you supposed to assess skill?
Careful about protecting the value of its endorsement, The Red Seal sets it’s standards for certification incredibly high. Of those that apply for examination and certification each year, only a handful ever succeed. It takes significant time and energy to develop the understanding and cultivate the experience necessary to pass, and even then, most don’t. The Red Seal is not interested in making certification easy, and as such you can trust it as a powerful indicator of a tradespersons commitment to quality.
